ΓΙΑΤΙ ΑΓΑΠΩ τον Matt Pokora

Τον Matt Pokora τον παρακολουθώ εδώ και μερικά χρόνια. Ήταν εξ αρχής ένα όμορφο αγόρι, που τραγουδούσε και χόρευε καλά. Όμως πλέον έφτασε η στιγμή να του αφιερωθεί ένα κείμενο στο ΓΙΑΤΙ ΑΓΑΠΩ. Γιατί τώρα;  Ίσως γιατί ο τελευταίος του δίσκος έγινε «διαμαντένιος» (που σημαίνει πάνω από 500.000 αντίτυπα στη Γαλλία), ίσως γιατί ψάχνοντας πληροφορίες για αυτόν εντυπωσιάστηκα, ίσως γιατί πλέον τα περισσότερα πρωινά η μέρα μου ξεκινά με το Cette année-là για να μου φτιάξει η διάθεση; Μπορεί αν διαβάσετε παρακάτω, να καταλάβετε γιατί.

Ο Matt, λοιπόν, έφυγε από το Στρασβούργο σχεδόν 18 ετών (το 2003) για να συμμετάσχει στο μουσικό reality Pop Stars, το οποίο και κέρδισε. Όπως έχει πει ο ίδιος, δεν φανταζόταν ποτέ ότι μπαίνοντας στο τρένο για το Παρίσι, ουσιαστικά δεν θα επέστρεφε ποτέ στο πατρικό του σπίτι. Με τη λήξη του παιχνιδιού, έγινε μέλος του συγκροτήματος Link Up με το οποίο κυκλοφόρησε ένα single που πήγε αρκετά καλά. Όμως η συνέχεια για το συγκρότημα δεν ήταν αντίστοιχη, οπότε το 2004 ξεκίνησε σόλο καριέρα.

Έκτοτε, έχει κυκλοφορήσει 7 άλμπουμ:  M. Pokora το 2004, Player το 2006, MP3 το 2008 με παραγωγό τον  Timbaland (μαζί με τον οποίο και με τον Sebastian Full συνεργάστηκαν και στο κομμάτι Dangerous), Mise à jour το 2010 που κυκλοφόρησε σε νέα έκδοση το 2011 με τίτλο Updated / Mise à jour Version 2.0, À la poursuite du Bonheur το 2012 (για το οποίο κυκλοφόρησε και ζωντανή ηχογράφηση από τη συναυλία στο Bercy το 2013), R.E.D. το 2015, και το φθινόπωρο του 2016 το πιο πετυχημένο του άλμπουμ με τίτλο My Way.

Ανάμεσα στα παλαιότερα κομμάτια του, ξεχωρίζουν τα Le monde με βίντεο κλιπ που θυμίζει ταινία μικρού μήκους (αλλά προτείνω να δείτε και την ζωντανή εκτέλεση του κομματιού στη Marseille με τον Matt στο πιάνο από την φετινή του περιοδεία), Mieux que nous (ντουέτο με τον Soprano που μιλά για τα παιδιά χωρισμένων γονιών- ένα τέτοιο είναι και ο ίδιος), το ρυθμικό Voir la nuit s’emballer, το μελωδικό Juste un instant, και το Juste une photo de toi  (σε μουσική και στίχους του ίδιου, αν και σαφώς προτιμώ την ακουστική έκδοση).

Είναι ενδεικτικό ότι ο Matt πρωταγωνίστησε to 2013 με τεράστια επιτυχία στο μιούζικαλ Ρομπέν των Δασών, που παρουσιάστηκε αρχικά στο Παρίσι, αλλά κατέληξε να περιοδεύει για μήνες σε όλη τη Γαλλία. Και είναι επίσης άξιο λόγου ότι, εδώ και 14 χρόνια, ο Matt Pokora σαρώνει τα μουσικά βραβεία (μάλιστα το 2014 ήταν συνυποψήφιος με τον επίσης αγαπημένο David Guetta και τον κέρδισε στην κατηγορία «Γάλλος άνδρας καλλιτέχνης της χρονιάς»).

Έχοντας στο παρελθόν πειραματιστεί με διάφορα είδη μουσικής, στο My Way ο Matt διασκευάζει κομμάτια του υπέροχου Claude François, με τον οποίο σύμφωνα με πολλούς έχει αρκετά κοινά, μιας και εκείνος τραγουδούσε και χόρευε στη σκηνή. Συνολικά το My Way έχει έναν φρέσκο funk ήχο, αρκετά ενδιαφέροντα και ασυνήθιστο για Γαλλική μουσική. Παρακολουθώντας το περίπου 14 λεπτών ντοκιμαντέρ για το πώς ηχογραφήθηκε το άλμπουμ, συνειδητοποιώ ότι το αγόρι που θυμόμουν μεγάλωσε και ωρίμασε. Οι φωνητικές του ικανότητες δεν έχουν καμία σχέση με πριν μερικά χρόνια, είναι σαφέστατα βελτιωμένες.  Είναι προφανές ότι έχει δουλέψει πολύ και  ότι παίρνει τη δουλειά του στα σοβαρά. Το My Way ηχογραφήθηκε σε Παρίσι και Λονδίνο, με εξαιρετικούς μουσικούς. Ο Matt έδωσε τον καλύτερο του εαυτό στο συγκεκριμένο άλμπουμ, συμμετέχοντας ενεργά στις ενορχηστρώσεις, στις εισαγωγές των κομματιών, κλπ. Δεν είναι τυχαίο που το συγκεκριμένο άλμπουμ βρίσκεται εδώ και 30 εβδομάδες στα Γαλλικά charts (Best selling albums in France) αυτή τη στιγμή στη θέση 36, ενώ προφανώς έχει περάσει και από την πρώτη θέση.

Ακούγοντας ξανά και ξανά κομμάτια όπως το διαχρονικό Comme d’habitude (το Γαλλικό κομμάτι το οποίο διασκεύασε ο Sinatra και προέκυψε το My Way που όλοι ξέρουμε), παρατήρησα κάτι εξαιρετικά μοναδικό στη φωνή του Matt: ενώ είναι σχετικά σύνηθες οι αντρικές (και όχι μόνο) φωνές να έχουν βραχνάδα στις χαμηλές νότες, η φωνή του Pokora έχει μια ανατριχιαστική βραχνάδα στις ψηλές! Δεν νομίζω ότι είναι κάτι που έχω ξανασυναντήσει, τουλάχιστον από όσο θυμάμαι (και ομολογώ πως έσπασα το κεφάλι μου).

Ακόμα, βλέποντας στο YouTube το Belinda και το Alexandrie, Alexandra, διαπίστωσα πόσο ενδιαφέρουσες είναι οι χορογραφίες που συνοδεύουν τα τραγούδια του. Είναι εξαιρετικός χορευτής και πραγματικά απολαυστικός επί σκηνής. Αλλά πέρα από αυτό, φροντίζει να τον πλαισιώνουν πολυάριθμοι χορευτές-χορεύτριες και είναι προφανές πως οι παραγωγές, ακόμα και των βίντεο κλιπ του, είναι ιδιαιτέρως προσεγμένες. Για να μη μιλήσουμε για την τουρνέ του σε Γαλλία, Βέλγιο και Ελβετία που ξεκίνησε τον Μάρτιο και θα ολοκληρωθεί στο τέλος της χρονιάς, η οποία είναι γενικώς sold out, και αποτελεί  ένα πραγματικό υπερθέαμα διεθνών προδιαγραφών.

Επανέρχομαι λοιπόν στο αρχικό ερώτημα: γιατί τώρα; Νομίζω πως ο Matt πέρασε πλέον στην καλύτερη και πιο ώριμή του φάση. Γράφει μουσική, τραγουδάει εκπληκτικά, στήνει υπερθεάματα που προσελκύουν χιλιάδες κόσμου σε κάθε του εμφάνιση, συμμετέχει σε φιλανθρωπίες (είναι μέλος του φιλανθρωπικού θιάσου Les Enfoirés), υπογράφει  τη σειρά ρούχων OÔRA, έχει εστιατόριο στο Annecy, είναι coach στο Γαλλικό Voice (και κάτι μου λέει ότι θα το κερδίσει). Κοιτάζοντας και ακούγοντάς τον, καταλαβαίνεις ότι το αγόρι έγινε άντρας γεμάτος αυτοπεποίθηση, δημιουργική εκκεντρικότητα, ευφυία, διάθεση για δουλειά, σεβασμό για τον κόσμο και για αυτό που κάνει. Ένας άνθρωπος που πιστεύει ότι μπορούμε να καταφέρουμε τα πάντα, που ακτινοβολεί θετική διάθεση και ενέργεια, που δεν λέει ποτέ κακή κουβέντα για κανέναν, που είναι ευγνώμων για όσα ζει (το Pokora είναι ψευδώνυμο και σημαίνει στα πολωνικά ταπεινότητα-ο Matt έχει και Πολωνικές ρίζες) και που σχεδόν πάντα χαμογελά. Νομίζω πως είναι ένας από τους ήλιους της σύγχρονης Γαλλόφωνης μουσικής σκηνής: toi Matt, Toi et le soleil (ζωντανή εκτέλεση στις Βρυξέλλες στις 17/03/2017)!

WHY I LOVE Matt Pokora

For regular readers of this blog, it is no surprise that I am writing again about a French artist. After Francis Cabrel, Christophe Maé, Mika and David Guetta, the time has come to dedicate a blog post to

Matt Pokora, who has caught my attention a few years ago as the handsome boy who could sing and dance. So, why now? Maybe because his last album has sold over 500,000 copies (“diamond”), maybe because while I was searching information on him I was totally impressed, maybe because my days lately have constantly been starting with Cette année-là which makes me dance every morning? If you read the text to the end, you will probably understand why.

Matt has left Strasbourg when he was almost 18 years old (in 2003), in order to participate to the music reality show Popstars in Paris, which he won. He actually moved to Paris ever since. After the end of the show, he became member of the band Link Up, whose first single was quite a success. But that was about it for the band, so he decided to start a solo career in 2004.

Since then, he has released 7 albums:  M. Pokora in 2004, Player in 2006, MP3 in 2008 produced by Timbaland (with whom and with Sebastian Full they released the song Dangerous), Mise à jour in 2010 which was released again in 2011 in a new version (and a new title: Updated / Mise à jour Version 2.0,) À la poursuite du Bonheur in 2012 (a live version was also released for this album from the concert in Bercy in 2013), R.E.D. in 2015, and his most successful album in the fall of 2016 called My Way.

Among his older songs, I loved Le monde which has an amazing video clip that resembles to a short film (but I strongly suggest the song’s live version in Marseille where Matt plays the piano), also Mieux que nous (a duet with Soprano that speaks about the children of separated parents), the rhythmic Voir la nuit s’emballer, as well as Juste un instant, and of course Juste une photo de toi  (a song composed and written by himself-but  I truly prefer the song’s acoustic version).

It is also worth mentioning that Matt starred with great success in the musical Robin des Bois (Robin Hood) that was initially presented in Paris but also toured for months throughout France. Plus, Matt Pokora has repeatedly won various music awards in France (in 2014 he was nominated in the category “Best French Male Artist of the Year” with one of my favorite French artists David Guetta,  but Matt actually won).

My Way is an album where Matt Pokora revisits the songs of the amazing Claude François, with whom many seem to find that he bears resemblance, due to the fact that he was also an entertainer who danced and sang on stage. Overall, My Way has a fresh funk sound, quite interesting and rather unusual in the French music industry. After watching the 14-minute documentary on how the album was recorded, I realized that the boy I remember has grown. His vocal abilities are obviously tremendously improved. It is clear that he has worked hard and that he takes his job seriously. My Way was recorded in Paris and London, with the cooperation of remarkable musicians. And Matt was actively involved in every detail, like orchestrations and track introductions. It is not by accident that this album has been on the charts of Best selling albums in France for 30 weeks (in position 36 as we speak, but it was also number 1 for ten weeks).

Listening over and over again to the timeless Comme d’habitude (the song the Sinatra made famous as My Way with English lyrics), I observed something extremely unique in Matt Pokora’s voice: while it is rather usual for male (and not only) singers to have a natural hoarseness in the low notes, Matt’s voice has a charming hoarseness in the high notes! I don’t remember any other artist possessing such an interesting feature in his/her voice (and I reassure you, I tried very hard to find at least one).

On the other hand, having repeatedly watched Belinda and Alexandrie, Alexandra on YouTube, I observed the interesting choreographies presented with his songs. Not only is Matt an amazing dancer, but he is accompanied by a team of talented dancers and takes his video clip productions very seriously. Not to mention his tour in France, Belgium and Switzerland, which started in March and will be completed at the end of 2017; the My Way tour is a spectacle of international standards and, as you can imagine, it is sold out.

So, let’s come back to the initial question: Why write now about Matt Pokora, after all these years that he has been around? I believe that he is currently in the best/most mature phase of his career and his life. He writes music, his voice is amazing, he attracts thousands of people on his tour, he is actively engaged in charity events (he is a member of the troupe “Les Enfoirés”), he has launched the fashion brand OÔRA, he is the co-owner of a restaurant in Annecy, he is a coach at The Voice France (and the chances that he wins are actually quite high). He has nothing to prove; just by looking and listening to him, it is easy to understand that the boy has turned into a man, full of self-confidence, creative eccentricity, intelligence, and respect for the public and for his profession. He is a hard-working person who motivates others and  believes that we can accomplish anything; a team player full of energy and positivity, who never says negative things about other people; a man grateful for his life (Pokora is not his real name; it means humility in Polish- Matt has Polish roots) and who is almost always smiling. I think that Matt is one of the “suns” in French music: toi Matt, Toi et le soleil (live from the Brussels gig on 17/03/2017)!

ΓΙΑΤΙ ΑΓΑΠΩ την Birdy

Αναζητώντας  πληροφορίες για την Birdy για τις ανάγκες αυτού του κειμένου, συνειδητοποίησα για μια ακόμη φορά πως ο χρόνος φεύγει με ιλιγγιώδεις ρυθμούς. Το κορίτσι με το θλιμμένο βλέμμα και το αστείρευτο μουσικό ταλέντο, όχι μόνο ενηλικιώθηκε αλλά βρίσκεται στην αρχή της τρίτης δεκαετίας της ζωής της. Θυμάμαι ακόμη την έκπληξή μου τη μέρα που πρωτοάκουσα στο ραδιόφωνο το People help the people και ο παραγωγός ανέφερε ότι η ερμηνεύτρια ήταν 15 ετών. Το αυθεντικό κομμάτι είχαν παρουσιάσει λίγα χρόνια νωρίτερα οι Cherry Ghost το 2007, αλλά ομολογουμένως η διασκευή ήταν καλύτερη από την original εκδοχή του τραγουδιού.

Η Birdy γεννήθηκε τον Μάιο του 1996 στο Lymington του Ηνωμένου Βασιλείου και είχε την τύχη να έχει πιάνο στο σπίτι της, μιας και η μητέρα της είναι πιανίστα. Έτσι, ξεκίνησε μαθήματα πιάνου στα 7 της χρόνια και τον επόμενο χρόνο έγραψε τα πρώτα της τραγούδια! Το πραγματικό της όνομα είναι αληθινός σιδηρόδρομος: Jasmine Lucilla Elizabeth Jennifer van den Bogaerde και το Birdy είναι ένα παρατσούκλι από την βρεφική της ηλικία, γιατί θύμιζε στους γονείς της τα μικρά πουλιά που ανοίγουν το στόμα τους για να ταϊστούν. Όταν ήταν 12 ετών, συμμετείχε στον Βρετανικό διαγωνισμό  Open Mic UK, που αποτελεί τον σημαντικότερο ίσως μουσικό διαγωνισμό για νέα ταλέντα. Η Birdy, διακρίθηκε ανάμεσα σε 10.000 διαγωνιζόμενους από όλο το Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο και κέρδισε τόσο την κατηγορία κάτω των 16 ετών στην οποία συμμετείχε (υπήρχαν δύο ακόμη κατηγορίες: 16-23 και άνω των 23 ετών), όσο και το Μεγάλο Βραβείο (Grand Prize), με το δικό της κομμάτι So Be Free (ή Be Free μεταγενέστερα)  το οποίο η τότε δωδεκάχρονη παρουσίασε ζωντανά σε κοινό 2.000 ατόμων.

Έκτοτε, τα πράγματα κύλησαν όπως οφείλουν να κυλούν για εκείνους τους ξεχωριστούς ανθρώπους που έρχονται στον πλανήτη για να μαγέψουν. Πέρα από το ότι έχει βραβευθεί αρκετές φορές, η Birdy έχει, στα 21 της χρόνια, κυκλοφορήσει τρεις δίσκους:  Birdy το 2011, Fire Within (2013) και Beautiful Lies (2016) με τεράστια επιτυχία διεθνώς. Τραγούδια όπως το Skinny love (με 127 εκατομμύρια προβολές στο YouTube μέχρι τη στιγμή που γράφονται αυτές οι γραμμές), το υπέροχο Wings, το All you never say, το soundtrack της ταινίας The fault in our stars με τίτλο Not about angels και τα πιο πρόσφατα Keeping your head up και Wild horses, αποδεικνύουν την δύναμη της απλότητας, της μελωδίας, και ενίοτε της μελαγχολίας. Επίσης αποδεικνύουν πως η ωριμότητα ενός καλλιτέχνη δεν είναι πάντα θέμα ηλικίας.

Η Birdy, καταξιωμένη διεθνώς πλέον, βρίσκεται σε μια εξαιρετικά δημιουργική φάση (προφανώς εκ γενετής). Αυτή την εποχή κάνει Ευρωπαϊκή περιοδεία, που διαδέχεται την περιοδεία της σε Αμερική και Ασία το 2016. Επίσης, σε διάφορες ζωντανές εμφανίσεις της σε ραδιοφωνικές εκπομπές, επιλέγει να παίξει κομμάτια συναδέλφων της που δεν αποτελούν τόσο προφανείς επιλογές, όπως το  Sorry του Justin Bieber στα SiriusXM Studios (που διαχειρίζονται τρεις δορυφορικούς ραδιοφωνικούς σταθμούς στην Αμερική) ή το Adventure of a lifetime των Coldplay στον γερμανικό ραδιοφωνικό σταθμό NPO 3FM.

Είναι βέβαιο ότι έχουμε πολλά ακόμη να δούμε και να ακούσουμε από το συγκεκριμένο κορίτσι. Η μουσική της είναι διαχρονική και έχει μια μοναδική θεραπευτική δύναμη, κάτι σαν κάθαρση για την ψυχή. Save yourself!

WHY I LOVE Birdy

During the research of information on Birdy in order to write this post, I realized once again that time flies. The girl with the sad look in her eyes and the undeniable musical talent is no longer a teenager; she is at the beginning of the third decade of her life. I still remember my surprise when I had first heard People help the people on the radio and the producer had mentioned that the singer was 15 years old. The original song had been presented a few years earlier by Cherry Ghost in 2007, but Birdy’s version was actually better than the original one.

Birdy was born in Μάιο 1996 in Lymington, UK, and she grew up in a house with a piano, since her mother was a pianist. So, she began learning to play the piano when she was 7 years old and one year after that, she wrote her first songs! Her real name is too long: Jasmine Lucilla Elizabeth Jennifer van den Bogaerde and her parents called her Birdy when she was a baby, because she opened her mouth in order to be fed like baby birds do. When she was 12 years old, she took part in the British music competition Open Mic UK, probably the most remarkable music competition for new talents. Birdy stood out among 10,000 candidates from all over the country and she won both the competition for candidates under 16 years old as well as the Grand Prize, presenting her song So Be Free (or Be Free) in front of 2,000 people!

Ever since, things worked out the way they ought to for those gifted people that have come to earth in order to make a difference. Apart from the fact that she has won various awards, Birdy has, at the age of 21, released three albums:  Birdy (2011), Fire Within (2013) and Beautiful Lies (2016) with international success. Songs like Skinny love (with more than 127 million views on YouTube as I am writing these lines), the amazing Wings, All you never say, the soundtrack of the movie The fault in our stars titled Not about angels and the more recent Keeping your head up and Wild horses, prove the power of simplicity, melody and -why not- melancholy. They also prove that an artist’s maturity is not necessarily a matter of age.

Birdy talent and creativity have been internationally acknowledged right from the beginning. She is now on a European tour, after having completed her tours in the US and in Asia in 2016. In her various appearances on radio shows, she chooses to cover songs that are not at all obvious choices for someone like her; like for example Justin Bieber’s Sorry when she was at SiriusXM Studios (who manage three satellite radio stations in the US) or Coldplay’s Adventure of a lifetime  in the German radio station NPO 3FM.

We certainly have a lot to expect from this girl. Her music is timeless and has a unique healing ability, something like a purification for the soul. Save yourself!
