ΓΙΑΤΙ ΑΓΑΠΩ την Janice Whaley

Ήταν 2011 όταν τυχαία «έπεσα» πάνω σε μια α καπέλα εκτέλεση του Bigmouth strikes again η οποία μου κίνησε το ενδιαφέρον. Μια σταθερή γυναικεία, φωνή με προφανώς μεγάλη γκάμα, είχε υποκαταστήσει όλα τα μουσικά όργανα. Με μια σύντομη αναζήτηση, ανακάλυψα ότι η Janice Whaley είχε ηχογραφήσει όλη (!) την δισκογραφία των Smiths με αυτόν ακριβώς τον τρόπο, αντικαθιστώντας όλα τα μουσικά όργανα με τη φωνή της και γράφοντας πολλά layers το ένα πάνω από το άλλο.

Άκουσα αρκετά ακόμη τραγούδια (το Internet και YouTube να είναι καλά): τα There is a light that never goes out,  The boy with the thorn on his side, Some girls are bigger than others, Heaven knows I am miserable now, The queen is dead, και I  know it’s over. Η δουλειά αυτή της Janice Whaley λέγεται The Smiths Project και της πήρε ένα χρόνο να την ολοκληρώσει. Πρόκειται για μια απίστευτη μουσική ιδιοφυΐα, με εξαιρετική επιμονή και ταλέντο.

Πέρα όμως από όλα αυτά, πρόκειται για έναν ιδιαίτερο άνθρωπο με ευαισθησίες

και ανοιχτό μυαλό. Στην δειλή μου προσπάθειά μου να επικοινωνήσω μαζί της το 2011, ορμώμενη από το γεγονός ότι θεωρώ πραγματική μοναδική την ιδέα της (και τον τρόπο που την υλοποίησε, σε ένα μικρό στούντιο στο σπίτι της με ατελείωτες ώρες προσωπικής εργασίας), βρέθηκα αντιμέτωπη με μια έκπληξη: η Janice όχι απλώς μου απάντησε, αλλά μπορώ να πω ότι γίναμε και «εξ αποστάσεως» φίλες. Έχουμε ανταλλάξει πολλά μηνύματα, έχει ακούσει δική μου μουσική, έχουμε μια γλυκιά επικοινωνία.

Στη συνέχεια, η Janice έβγαλε την πρώτη της δουλειά με δική της μουσική, με τίτλο Patchwork Life το 2012, στο οποίο συμπεριλήφθηκε και το ντουέτο Ideas as opiates με τον James Roday των Tears for Fears! Για άλλη μια φορά, η Janice έμεινε πιστή στο δικό της μουσικό είδος, μη χρησιμοποιώντας μουσικά όργανα πέρα από τη φωνή της (εκτός από ελάχιστο πιάνο και μία περίπτωση όπου χρησιμοποίησε ντραμς). Το 2013, κυκλοφόρησε το single We need you, διασκευή του ομώνυμου τραγουδιού των  Duran Duran, ύστερα από πρόταση του Simon Le Bon, ενώ έχει συμμετάσχει στο κομμάτι Trees του Curt Smith (των Tears for Fears), που συμπεριλήφθηκε στο άλμπουμ του με τίτλο Mayfield.

Σήμερα η σπουδαία αυτή καλλιτέχνης εξακολουθεί να ασχολείται με την μουσική, αλλά παράλληλα έχει ένα εστιατόριο για χορτοφάγους στο San Jose της California όπου ζει με τον σύντροφο και το γιο της. Και είναι να απορεί κανείς, πώς προωθούνται στην παγκόσμια μουσική βιομηχανία (μεταξύ άλλων) διάφοροι που δε διαθέτουν ούτε το μισό της ταλέντο, και όχι κάποιος σαν την Janice. Για να μην αναφέρω πόσα θα είχε να διδάξει σε φοιτητές μουσικής τεχνολογίας και ηχοληψίας η υπέροχη αυτή δημιουργός.

WHY I LOVE Janice Whaley

It was 2011 when I accidentally discovered an “a capella” version of the great Smiths’ song Bigmouth strikes again, which was very interesting. A stable woman’s voice, with an obviously wide range, has substituted all musical instruments. After searching, I discovered that the musician was called Janice Whaley and she had recorded all (!) the discography of the Smiths in exactly this way: substituting all musical instruments with her voice, recording multiple vocal layers for each song.

So, I found on the Internet and heard quite a few more songs: There is a light that never goes out,  The boy with the thorn on his side, Some girls are bigger than others, Heaven knows I am miserable now, The queen is dead, and I  know it’s over. This project that Janice Whaley put together is called “The Smiths Project” and it took her a year to complete. In my opinion, she is an amazing musical genius, with great determination and talent.

But apart from that, she is a very special person with an open mind. Back in 2011, I tried to contact her; I wanted to tell her how unique I found her idea and how extraordinary it was that she completed this project was in her house studio, spending hours and hours on her computer. Janice truly surprised me: not only she answered to my message, but we have become long-distance friends. We text each other, she has heard my music, we have a sweet communication ever since 2011.

Next, Janice released her first album of originals in 2012, titled “Patchwork Life”, which also included a duet with James Roday from Tears for Fears titled Ideas as opiates! Once again, Janice was loyal to the “a capella” music style with layers of vocals making up all instrumentation including drum beats, strings, synths, choirs, etc. but this time, with the addition of piano samples on a few songs and, in one case, a drum machine and bells. In 2013, a cover of the Duran Duran song We need you was released, after Simon Le Bon requested her to do so, while she also cooperated with Curt Smith (from Tears for Fears) in the song Trees, which was included in his solo album “Mayfield”.

Nowadays, this talented artist still makes music, but she is also running a vegetarian restaurant in San Jose, California, where she lives with her family. Sometimes, I think it is so unfair that people with less than half her talent are having careers in the music industry. Not to mention that she would have so much to teach to students of music technology!
